Canada Student Visa Requirements 2026

The Canadian study permit process has undergone significant changes in recent years. This guide covers the updated requirements for 2026, including the new attestation letter process and financial proof changes.

Basic Requirements To obtain a Canadian study permit, you need: acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof of financial support, a valid passport, clean criminal record, and good health. Some countries require biometrics and medical examinations.

Financial Requirements You must demonstrate funds covering living expenses plus your first year's tuition. IRCC sets the required living-cost amount and has revised it upward more than once, so check the current figure on canada.ca rather than relying on a number quoted in a guide. Accepted proof includes bank statements, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), scholarships, or sponsor letters.

Provincial Attestation Letters Since 2024, most study permit applications require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province where you'll study. This letter confirms that the province has allocated a spot for your application. Contact your institution for details on obtaining a PAL.

The Student Direct Stream is closed IRCC closed the Student Direct Stream on 8 November 2024. It previously offered expedited processing to students from certain countries — including India, China, the Philippines, Pakistan, Senegal, Morocco and Vietnam — in exchange for meeting fixed conditions such as a specific language score and a GIC. Every study permit application now follows the standard process, regardless of nationality. A great deal of advice published while the SDS was open is still circulating and still ranking in search; if a guide tells you to apply through the SDS or quotes a twenty-day processing time, it is describing a program that no longer exists. The upside is flexibility: without the SDS's rigid conditions, you have more latitude in how you demonstrate funds and language ability.

Post-Graduation Work Permit After completing your studies, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for up to 3 years, depending on your program length. The PGWP is a crucial step on the pathway to permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class.

Application Tips Apply at least 4-6 months before your program start date. Ensure all documents are translated and certified. Prepare a study plan explaining why you chose Canada and your institution. Have your financial documents cover at least 12 months of expenses.
