Why Study in Canada?

Canada consistently ranks among the top destinations for international students — and for good reason. Here is what makes Canadian education stand out.

World-Class Education

Canadian degrees are recognized worldwide. With 26 universities in the global top 1000, Canada offers rigorous academics, cutting-edge research facilities, and a curriculum that blends theory with practical experience.

Affordable Tuition

Compared to the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, Canadian tuition fees are significantly lower. Many provinces also offer health insurance coverage for international students at no additional cost.

Work While Studying

International students in Canada can work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, helping offset living costs and gain valuable Canadian work experience.

Pathway to Permanent Residence

Canada actively encourages international graduates to stay. The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) create a clear pathway from student to permanent resident.

Tuition Costs for International Students

Canadian tuition is competitive compared to other English-speaking countries. Here are typical annual costs for international students.

Undergraduate Programs

$20,000 - $40,000 CAD/year

Varies by province and program; arts programs are typically lower, engineering and business are higher.

Graduate Programs (Master's)

$17,000 - $35,000 CAD/year

Research-based programs are often cheaper due to available funding and assistantships.

Doctoral Programs (PhD)

$7,000 - $20,000 CAD/year

Many PhD students receive full funding through scholarships, fellowships, or teaching assistantships.

College Diploma Programs

$15,000 - $25,000 CAD/year

Shorter duration (1-3 years) with strong employment outcomes and lower overall cost.

Study Permit Requirements

To study in Canada, international students must obtain a study permit. Here is the eligibility checklist to prepare your application.

Acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Proof of sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses (minimum $20,635 CAD/year plus tuition)
Valid passport or travel document
Clean criminal record (police certificate)
Medical examination (if required based on country of residence)
Proof of intent to leave Canada upon permit expiry (ties to home country)
Biometrics (fingerprints and photo)
Statement of purpose explaining your study plans

Processing Time: Study permit applications typically take 4 to 16 weeks depending on your country of residence. We recommend applying at least 3-4 months before your program start date.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is one of Canada's most valuable immigration tools for international students. After completing a program at a designated learning institution, you can obtain an open work permit to gain Canadian work experience.

8-month program: PGWP equal to length of study
2-year program: Up to 3-year open work permit
4-year degree program: 3-year open work permit

PGWP Eligibility

Completed a program of at least 8 months
Studied at a designated learning institution (DLI)
Held a valid study permit during studies
Applied within 180 days of receiving final marks
Received a letter confirming program completion

Pathway to Permanent Residence

International graduates have multiple pathways to transition from a study permit to permanent residence in Canada.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class is part of the Express Entry system and is designed specifically for individuals with Canadian work experience. After working for at least one year on your PGWP, you can apply through Express Entry with a strong Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

  • 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience
  • Language proficiency (CLB 7 for NOC 0/A, CLB 5 for NOC B)
  • No education requirement (but Canadian education adds CRS points)

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Many provinces have dedicated immigration streams for international graduates. Provincial Nominee Programs offer an additional 600 CRS points, virtually guaranteeing an invitation to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry.

  • Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) — Masters and PhD streams
  • British Columbia PNP — International Graduate stream
  • Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)
  • Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) for Quebec graduates
