Canada Student Visa Requirements 2026

The Canadian study permit process has undergone significant changes in recent years. This guide covers the updated requirements for 2026, including the new attestation letter process and financial proof changes.

Basic Requirements To obtain a Canadian study permit, you need: acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof of financial support, a valid passport, clean criminal record, and good health. Some countries require biometrics and medical examinations.

Financial Requirements As of 2026, you must demonstrate funds of at least $20,635 CAD per year for living expenses, plus your first year's tuition. Accepted proof includes bank statements, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), scholarships, or sponsor letters.

Provincial Attestation Letters Since 2024, most study permit applications require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province where you'll study. This letter confirms that the province has allocated a spot for your application. Contact your institution for details on obtaining a PAL.

Student Direct Stream (SDS) Students from certain countries (India, China, Philippines, Pakistan, Vietnam, and others) may qualify for the Student Direct Stream, which offers faster processing (approximately 20 calendar days). SDS requires IELTS 6.0+ in each band and a GIC.

Post-Graduation Work Permit After completing your studies, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for up to 3 years, depending on your program length. The PGWP is a crucial step on the pathway to permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class.

Application Tips Apply at least 4-6 months before your program start date. Ensure all documents are translated and certified. Prepare a study plan explaining why you chose Canada and your institution. Have your financial documents cover at least 12 months of expenses.
