What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is an online immigration application management system introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in January 2015. It is not an immigration program itself, but rather a system used to manage and process applications for three federal economic immigration programs.
Candidates create an online profile and are ranked against each other using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residence through regular draws from the Express Entry pool.
Three Express Entry Programs
Express Entry manages three federal immigration programs. Each has its own eligibility criteria, but all are ranked using the CRS.
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
For skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently.
Key Requirements
- At least 1 year of continuous full-time skilled work experience (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) in the past 10 years
- Language proficiency: minimum CLB 7 in English or French
- Education: Canadian credential or equivalent foreign credential assessed by a designated organization (ECA)
- Must score at least 67 out of 100 on the FSW points grid
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
For workers who have gained skilled work experience in Canada and want to become permanent residents.
Key Requirements
- At least 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last 3 years
- Work experience in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations
- Language proficiency: CLB 7 for NOC TEER 0 or 1, CLB 5 for NOC TEER 2 or 3

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
For skilled tradespeople who want to become permanent residents based on their trade qualification.

- At least 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years
- Meet the job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the NOC
- Language proficiency: CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing

General Eligibility Criteria
While each Express Entry program has specific requirements, the following general criteria apply to all candidates.
Work Experience
At least 1 year of skilled work experience (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) within the relevant timeframe for your chosen program.
Language Proficiency
Valid results from an approved language test (IELTS General or CELPIP for English; TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French), with scores meeting the minimum CLB requirements.
Education
A Canadian post-secondary credential, or a foreign credential with a valid Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from a designated organization.
Proof of Funds
Sufficient settlement funds for you and your family (unless you have a valid Canadian job offer or are applying under CEC from within Canada).
Admissibility
You must be admissible to Canada — no serious criminal record, no security concerns, and no health conditions that pose a risk to public health or safety.
Intent to Reside
You must intend to live in Canada (outside Quebec, which has its own immigration system) once you become a permanent resident.
Step-by-Step Process

Check Your Eligibility
Determine which Express Entry program you qualify for — Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, or Federal Skilled Trades. You must meet the minimum requirements of at least one program to enter the pool.
Gather Your Documents
Prepare language test results (IELTS or CELPIP for English, TEF or TCF for French), Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), passport, work reference letters, and proof of funds. All documents must be current and valid.
Create Your Express Entry Profile
Submit your profile online through IRCC's website. Provide information about your skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other details. Your profile will be scored under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Receive Your CRS Score & Enter the Pool
Once your profile is complete, you receive a CRS score and enter the Express Entry pool. You can improve your score by gaining additional work experience, improving language scores, obtaining a provincial nomination, or getting a valid job offer.
Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
IRCC conducts regular draws from the Express Entry pool. If your CRS score is at or above the draw's cut-off, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Category-based draws may also target specific occupations or qualifications.
Submit Your Application for Permanent Residence
After receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete application with all supporting documents, police clearances, and medical exams. Most applications are processed within 6 months after submission.

The best strategy is to maximize your score across all factors — language, education, work experience, and additional points like PNP nomination or a job offer.
How long does Express Entry processing take?
IRCC aims to process most Express Entry applications within 6 months of receiving a complete application. However, processing times can vary depending on the volume of applications, completeness of your submission, and whether additional documents are requested.
Can I include my spouse or partner in my Express Entry application?
Yes, you can include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in your application. Your partner's education, language skills, and Canadian work experience can also contribute to your CRS score. If your partner's profile is stronger, they may consider being the principal applicant.
Do I need a job offer to apply through Express Entry?
No, a job offer is not required to apply through Express Entry. However, a valid job offer supported by a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) can add 50 or 200 points to your CRS score, significantly improving your chances of receiving an ITA.
What happens if my Express Entry profile expires?
Express Entry profiles are valid for 12 months. If you don't receive an ITA within that time, your profile expires and is removed from the pool. You can create a new profile and re-enter the pool at any time, as long as you still meet the eligibility requirements.
Can I apply for Express Entry from inside Canada?
Yes, you can create an Express Entry profile and apply for permanent residence from within Canada or from outside Canada. There is no requirement to be physically present in either location during the application process.
